Students and drumming enthusiasts attended drum workshops on marching percussion, concert percussion, world percussion, and drum set playing. Perc Up participants received personal percussion coaching and help from some amazing percussion instructors and drummers.
One prevailing theme carried the day… don’t skip basic fundamentals to be great! Thom Hannum and Jim Irish talked about how to be really great, one must not skip the basics. They explained that mastering basic fundamentals leads to extraordinary skills and playing greatness. Thom opened with a general session on grip maintenance and articulation, then conducted a mallet clinic for marimba, vibes, and bells.
Thom Hannum gave us a sneak peak of the upcoming Carolina Crown show, which we now know earned them a Drum Corps International World Championship!
Jim Irish lead a rudimental snare drum masterclass. Kyle Campbell conducted Perc Up’s Crash Course on cymbal line playing. Shon Brown and members of the Clemson Drumline helped with tenors and bass drum line playing.
Gregg Bissonette gave amazing performances while instructing on playing musically and rudimentarily. Gregg talked about reading music and the importance of rudiments.
Jason Currin demonstrated Udu drums and Brazilian Percussion. Jessie Will and Josh Frans wowed audiences with world percussion music and a amazing marimba duet.
Gregg Bissonette and Jim Irish played a duet in the afternoon. Thom Hannum joined them at The Percussion Showcase evening concert for a audience treat trio!
At Perc Up 2013 we saw performances and learned drumming skills from some of the world’s best drummers and percussionists including Emmy & Tony Award winning artist Thom Hannum! We met Grammy Award winning drummer Gregg Bissonette, from Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band! We watched World Percussion groups including Coastal Carolina University World Music Ensemble CalypSamba, D.R.U.M., Riverside Drumline, TL Hanna Drumline, Southside Percussion, A.C.E., percussion ensembles and more! Proceeds go toward music education. Let’s drum!
